The game has a screw on a short post in the inner loop, presumably to slow the ball down.  It works in that regard, but the ball hits the screw head instead of the post.  This can cause nicks and dings in the ball, which will then tear up the playfield.
The offending screw and post, removed from the machine.
 
I reduced the diameter of the screw head and countersunk the spacer... ...and here it is ready to go back into the game.
   

Now the ball only hits the plastic post.  No more metal-to-metal contact here!
