Here are some shots of the Stern flipper mechanism.  Unlike the dual-wound coil design, Stern holds the flipper up by pulsing the coil.  This method is effective but does make the coil very hot.

One thing I like better on the Stern flipper mechanism is the plastic piece that opens the end-of-stroke switch... much more robust than the old way: a thin piece of heat-shrink tubing over a metal tab.
